Top Ten Reasons to Attend the WSPTA Convention

  • It helps you connect with a broader community. This is especially important this time of year when you can feel all alone and up to your eyeballs in "stuff" you don't feel like you can handle.
  • Make contacts you can call on during the year.  It is great to have a support group of people with similar interests and challenges that want to see you succeed.
  • You see you're not the only one CRAZY ENOUGH to love your volunteer work and want to make a difference through your organization.
  • You can use this opportunity to give back.  This is not just about what you have to get, but what you have to give.  Your insight and experience may make all the difference to someone new.
  • Interaction with other volunteers outside your organization helps you expand your interpersonal skills and comfort levels.
  • Learn new ways to do things.  Get access to information on the latest trends, best practices, useful tools and more.  Quit re-inventing the wheel!
  • Learn new things to do.  Discover resources you can use throughout the year (management information, fundraising ideas, great ideas from other groups like yours and more!).
  • Influence the direction the organization is going.  Your parent organization relies on input from its members to stay relevant.
  • Re-connect with your purpose.  This helps you see the big picture of WHY you do what you do, the role you can play, and what that role can look like.
  • Set goals.  Work with other board members to get a clear vision of where you want your organization to go and how you are going to get there. Think of this as, perhaps, a mini retreat for those attending from your local unit.

New Class Added: Teen Truth, an Inside Look at Bullying and Violence

Great News!  We have just added a new option during the Professional Growth & Development Session on Friday, April 25th from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

TEEN TRUTH: An Inside Look at Bullying & School Violence--This thought provoking experience pairs an award-winning film with a motivational talk from TEEN TRUTH's Executive Producer & Co-Founder, JC Pohl.  Since its launch in 2006, TEEN TRUTH has developed a raw, empowering approach that has helped schools, corporations, and government organizations across North America better understand the issue of bullying. Using multi-media, proven psychology and powerful truths, this program will challenge you to think about how you treat others and empower you to find ways to be the difference in your school community.  Attend this session to learn how to motivate your members to not only combat the issue of bullying on campus, but also diffuse it when issues arise in your PTA.

Also don’t forget our other class option!

Does Your Communication Style Help or Hinder Your Effectiveness / Leadership Capabilities? Laura Katen, president of Katen Consulting, a NY-based training company that specializes in helping individuals to exude a professional presence, will share valuable information to help convention attendees better understand that they can control how others perceive them by how they present themselves and communicate information; share strategies that attendees can immediately use to strengthen communication and build rapport with others; facilitate interactive exercises and discussions that will help attendees to more fully understand, practice, and apply key techniques presented.

No registration is needed, delegates can just walk in and attend whatever class they choose.  Plan to attend the Professional Growth and Development Session at the Bellevue Hyatt Regency Hotel from 9:00 am - 10:30 am on Friday, April 25.

Many cities, schools, and organizations are eager to join the governor in this annual effort to show support for the arts education that every child needs and this is an easy and impactful way to raise awareness in your communities about the value of arts education for every student. A sample proclamation/resolution can be found here. You can also get sample letters to introduce your request, and other handy tools on the ArtsEd Washington website. Then be sure to send your completed proclamations & resolutions to ArtsEd Washington so we can post them online. Question of the Week

QUESTION:

We have invited our newly elected board members to attend the last board meeting of the year in June to sit in and observe. They want to come to all remaining board meetings so they can fully understand the process and ask all their questions. What is the normal procedure?

ANSWER:
A best practice, and it would also help to ensure a great transition of officers, would be to have the newly elected members at the meetings prior to the last one, as well, but to set clear parameters. They are there to observe, but do not have a voice or vote in those meetings. (The outgoing board, could grant them a voice, but that is up to the board), and of course, they do not have a vote.

Question of the Week

QUESTION:
Is there is any conflict with paying a PTA member to babysit during our general meetings?

ANSWER:
An independent contractor generally includes any person or entity retained for a limited duration (generally not to exceed one year) to provide professional or specialized services that may not be readily available otherwise. Such persons are often paid either on an hourly or project basis as opposed to weekly or monthly. Also, their work is not subject to the control of the person or entity that hires them. Because they are not employees, independent contractors are not entitled to benefits provided to employees under federal and state employment laws. You should not try to determine for yourself whether an individual is an employee or contractor.

If your PTA’s babysitter is an independent contractor and you pay over $600.00 in a calendar year, you would be required to provide a 1099-MISC. If you pay less than $600.00 in a calendar year, you are not required to provide a 1099-MISC.

The other consideration for your PTA concerns insurance. If your PTA is insured through AIM, babysitting is covered under your General Liability insurance policy provided you follow the outlined precautions below to limit the risk of a claim:

Babysitting is only something you would provide during your organization meetings or other sponsored events. You must have two adult volunteers (18 years or older) in the room at all times. This dual rule protects against any molestation claims, provides a second witness to rule out false claims, and provides extra assistance in the case of an emergency. If paid baby sitters are involved, they will not be covered under this policy. This information comes from AIM, so if you have any further questions regarding this, call AIM for further details.

If your local unit doesn't have AIM insurance, then you will need to contact your insurance company to make sure that babysitting is covered.

$10,000 Available for Your PTA Council or Region -- Apply by April 11

Other benefits for your PTA include:
  • 1 round-trip, all expenses paid trip to Austin, TX for training and 1 complimentary registration for the National PTA Annual Convention

Watch this webinar or review the application on pta.org today to learn more and apply online by April 11th.  Questions? Contact National PTA Programs.

Please note that at the time of applying, the PTA just needs to have a sense of what the energy balance needs of their community are, what community partners they may reach out to and what PreKs in their area they may be able to work with.
