QUESTION:
We
are putting together our school directory and ask our school community for
advertisements to include in it. A local church would like to place an
advertisement in this directory. Is there a rule with regards to advertising
religious affiliations?
ANSWER:
PTA
is nonsectarian. If you allow one religious group to
advertise then you are obligated to allow all religions to advertise.
To avoid any confusion about PTA’s nonsectarian policy, you may choose to
include the following statement if you allow religious advertisements:
“PTA welcomes into membership people representing a
diversity of cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and political and religious
beliefs. The purposes of the PTA acknowledge the importance of a spiritual
life in the development of children and youth. We recognize that in this
pluralistic nation not all members share the same beliefs and we welcome
advertisements from all religious groups in our community.”
